The design of the staircase is crucial. In our coaster is a 180 degree turn and the stairs are not wide. Acorn came up with the best design, but we decided not to go ahead as a situation was not crucial.
In properties where the stairs are straight and of reasonable width, the decision would be more straightforward.
I have a few friends that have chosen Acorn and they are all satisfied. Truly, there is less competition out there then I had realized. |

All the new Stannah ones make you to use a seatbelt in order to work. I resent having to use a seatbelt to travel five yards up my stairs.This should be optional. The more remote and self moving parts make failures more likely. My old one was physically attached to all the areas required to function.
It was comfortable, straightforward and was very reliable during the 31 years that I had it. It also fitted in with the ambience of the lounge. Dropping the seat down let the footrest drop down at the same time. Also I prefered the fact that it took me right up to my landing and I didn't have to turn it round to alight and turn it back, after manually lifting the seat, hand supports and footrest so that it was out of the way of others. |

Don't believe everything you hear. Get someone out to look at your stairs. They will talk you through any difficulties and options available. Different companies offer different types of lift so get a few companies to get a good comparison. You'll see who you trust yourself. Also check for after sales support. I decided to go with a company that has a person with mobility issues on the design and sales teams so they understand the difficulties we face first hand. |

They are all similar, we got a discount for letting them choose installation date. Many people want stairlift fitted immediately, often as a result of injury or illness. Also look at extra charges for warranty & service. Very expensive at £1500 for3 years because they need to do service to keep guarantee valid, very pushy sales person. |

We could only find one company that would give us a quote. We had a unique situation having a door entrance right at the bottom of the stairs. They (acorn stair lift) had a wonderful hinged solution. No service men where available but they let me install the lift myself. Top notch tech support. Easy to follow instructions. Took just a few hours to install. The most patient saleswoman I've ever known. Highly recommended company to work with. |

Do your research. Acorn is a fantastic lift, however they do not resell well. They are crazy expensive, worth the money if you have it for a long time. Other companies don't like to buy them as they use different mechanisms and are harder to repair as anyone other than Acorn can't get parts. |

Try to find somewhere where you can try rhe actual seat. The seat on mine is incredibly uncomfortable and not helpful wirh my condition. Using it is very painfully so I don't use the lift very often and am still mainly living downstairs. It was an expensive mistake |

I contacted 3 different companies. 1 was called back 1 week later
Another : we will let you know when we can come and give you a quote. The one I selected said they had a rep on the road, who rang within 30 minutes. Showed me the product, fully explained how it worked, was able to have it installed in 3 days if I was happy or at any time that eould be convenient to me. I chose 3 day option. They had it installed on time and where gone within 2 hours leaving area clean and tidy. Full instructions including after hours contact details |

Give some thought to getting furniture and kitchen equipment upstairs if the living quarters are upstairs and use the stair it case. It is not possible to get a replacement dishwasher or refrigerator up if a chairlift is installed.

Get a stairlift before the prices go higher. Be prepared in advance and even if you can still climb the stairs with no difficulty it really helps to get heavy groceries up and down the stairs. Prices keep going up so get the lift while it may still be affordable. I definitely recommend Acorn stairlifts. They are fast and very reliable and will last a very long time. |

You may only need the chairlift a few weeks. It isn't clear how to sell one. The companies don't buy them back although they will dismantle them and move them to a buyer if you have one. If you think the stairlift will not be needed for long rental would be a more economical option.

It is only for my wife and it has been a life changer - if I have any advice its still use the stairs if you are able - its a good exercise until you may one day need it, do not secumb to the chair lift. It takes a lot of will power but stick with the stairs. !! |

make sure your stairs are wide enough if you are in an older home and the user(s) are tall (had to pay extra 2,800.00 to widen stairs). Also , make sure you have a USABLE outlet nearby. Spent an additional 240.00 to install outlet and then couldn't use it because it could interfere with chairlift operation. |

Get plenty of quotes prices are enormously different for same article , £5k to £8.5k , unfortunately companies seem to load the price because the customer is disabled or the state is paying, we did not choose the cheapest but were really surprised and unsatisfied with the whole process |

Check on servicing costs, battery replacement costs. The Acorn Lift has worked for me for almost 16 years. BUT the annual service premium is so high that I decided I be less expensive just to replace the entire lift; make sure you have options on more than one provider to service the sucker otherwise you're stuck. |
